Mental Health Treatment and Behavioral Health Services at South Dayton Pediatrics

South Dayton Pediatrics provides mental health treatment and behavioral health services directly within our primary care medical practice. Mental health and behavioral health are two distinct but closely connected areas of practice.

Mental health focuses on emotional and psychological concerns.

Behavioral health focuses on habits, routines, behaviors, lifestyle choices, and how physical health influences daily functioning.

South Dayton Pediatrics connects medical services with mental health treatment and behavioral health services through a model called Integrated Behavioral Health. This is a holistic model that blends medical care with mental health treatment and behavioral health services in one familiar setting. This model is still emerging in the Dayton region, and only a small number of pediatric practices currently offer it.

What Is Integrated Behavioral Health?

Integrated Behavioral Health is a coordinated model where mental, behavioral, and medical care work together. Our therapist coordinates directly with our pediatricians to build a trusted, comfortable patient-centered resource.

An Integrated Behavioral Health approach allows us to:
  • Provide early diagnosis and treatment when parents, schools, or children raise concerns.
  • Understand emotional, behavioral, developmental, and physical factors together.
  • Offer individualized care tailored to each child.
  • Reduce barriers to accessing support.
  • Connect families to specialized services when needed.

Because children often share concerns with their pediatrician before anyone else, this model helps families receive timely, comprehensive care without navigating multiple systems.

When Do Families Seek Mental Health & Behavioral Health Treatment?

Parents may notice changes at home, teachers may report challenges at school, or a child may share something during a routine visit. Sometimes the symptoms are clear, but the source of the problem isn't yet known.

Integrated Behavioral Health helps us identify and address concerns such as:
  • Emotional or psychological challenges
  • Behavioral changes or disruptions
  • Developmental transitions
  • Family stressors or adjustment issues
  • School related concerns
  • Social or peer difficulties

Because we treat a wide range of needs, we do not limit our care to a specific list of diagnoses. Instead, we focus on providing flexible, individualized support for each child and family
